Laboratory Research Technician II - McGovern



The McGovern lab investigates hearing restoration using molecular biology techniques. The technician will be responsible for completing experiments using animal models and molecular biology and molecular genetics approaches. The incumbent will be expected to: Maintain animal colony for the experiments that the technician will be in charge of. Hands on animal work is mandatory for this position. Keep a detailed and accurate lab notebook. Process experimental tissue using florescence microscopy and imaging analysis tools. This will involve the fine dissection of fixed experimental tissue using a dissection microscope, sectioning samples using vibratome, staining samples with fluorescently tagged antibodies, fluorescent in situ hybridization, and other similar procedures. Technician will keep a detailed and accurate lab notebook and collect data to report to PI. Careful and thoughtful use of laboratory equipment including a confocal microscope.Experience in a wet lab using molecular biology techniques is preferred. Experience with Mice is preferred. Position requires vaccination against Diphtheria Toxin.


Job Summary

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.


Essential Functions

Perform molecular based experiments using primary animal tissue. Experimental techniques include fluorescence antibody labeling and microscopy. Must be able to perform fine dissections using microscopy equipment.Animal handling will be required for this position. Technician will perform general animal husbandry including breeding, weaning, and genotyping. Technician will also perform experimental manipulations on animals. Technician will also be responsible for maintaining lab stocks and cleanliness at the discretion of the lab manager.


Physical Effort

Must be able to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able bend or squat to access animal cages at different heights. Must be able to lift at least 30lbs.
