Preservation Librarian/Assistant or Associate Librarian
University Libraries: Preservation Librarian/Assistant or Associate Librarian Preservation Librarian/Assistant or Associate Librarian. Miami University Libraries seeks a Preservation Librarian for the Steward & Sustain department. Reporting to the Head of the Steward & Sustain department, to provide leadership in planning and managing the preservation/conservation program for special collections, general library collections, and institutional archives; be responsible for a broad range of conservation and preservation activities including conservation assessment and treatment; exhibition, loan and digitization preservation; disaster planning and response; environmental monitoring; and emergency planning. Working closely with colleagues throughout Miami University Library, will provide outreach to Library staff concerning Library collections, practices, and preservation measures, and will ensure the smooth integration and timely completion of preservation and conservation activities. The Preservation Librarian/Assistant or Associate Librarian will identify, assess, and inventory the conservation and preservation needs of Miami University Library materials and develop a comprehensive plan to address existing and future needs to ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices; oversee and perform a variety of basic and intermediate conservation treatments in accordance with accepted standards of conservation practice; coordinate workflows and manage daily operation of the preservation/conservation activities and oversee staff in preservation; also may mentor interns; responsible for leading the Digital Preservation Program: collaborate with relevant staff on digital preservation policies, implementation, workflows and develop digitization strategies; oversees preservation activities pertaining to the digitization process of Steward & Sustain materials; coordinate preventive care, including pest management and environmental monitoring programs for the libraries; in concert with the Special collections Librarian, identify and work with outside conservation vendors to provide appropriate treatments to at-risk materials, negotiate costs and timelines, and monitor vendor performance; review proposals for exhibition and loan, and review facilities reports from borrowing institutions; train and provide guidance for Miami University libraries staff in materials handling, preservation decision-making, and physical care workflow; maintain an effective disaster/emergency response and recovery plan for University Libraries recovery activities; participate in Steward and Sustain instruction.
Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited program; experience in the preservation/conservation of materials; demonstrated ability to collaborate and direct teams; knowledge of current preservation theory and practice; knowledge of conservation/preservation history, ethics and methodology; knowledge of digital preservation theory and practices and metadata schema and standards; ability to meet the Miami University continuing contract and promotion requirements of the Libraries Appointment Rank and Promotion System (LARPS) https://www.lib.miamioh.edu/about/larps. Appointment as Associate Librarian requires an established record of service and scholarship as described in these requirements.

Consideration may be given to:
Candidates with advanced knowledge of preservation issues in cultural institutions; one to three years of preservation/conservation or equivalent experience knowledge, skills and abilities; experience with emerging technologies in preservation/conservation practice; experience with digital preservation systems (e.g. Preservica), archival software (e.g. Archives Space), and other information technologies.
