Position Purpose

To develop, conduct, and oversee major research efforts addressing specific aims of the Ghosh Laboratory.

Description

Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp

Bachelors plus 6 or more years' experience or combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Extensive knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, and biochemistry.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of research methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer software used for experimental data analysis, literature searches, and manuscript preparation and specialized computer applications related to the field of investigation.
  • Ability to independently design, plan, implement, troubleshoot, and administer all phases of the research work and to ensure that it addresses the major specific aims of the project/laboratory.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with model organisms (e.g., yeast, C. elegans) and/or tissue culture and mammalian cells.

Description

Research
  • Develops research hypotheses and plans appropriate experiments.
  • Designs and performs all experiments related to the project using sophisticated research techniques.
  • Keeps abreast of technological developments in the field and determines when to incorporate them into experimental plans.
  • Troubleshoots experimental protocols and techniques as needed.
  • Research literature and consult with other investigators within and outside of the institution to identify and resolve complex issues or problems.
  • Collects, analyzes, and interprets data resulting from experimentation to present findings and conclusions to the principal investigator.
  • Assesses feasibility of proposed research investigations and may prepare analyses of project costs (salaries, equipment, etc.)
  • In collaboration with the PI, prepares relevant portions of grant applications, ensuring compliance of submission with sponsor requirements.

Administration
  • Establishes and coordinates research procedures in adherence to protocol requirements.
  • Develops and negotiates budgets for procured services such as laboratory services.
  • Assures that all Federal guidelines and requirements are met.
  • Keeps PI informed of status of research activities, problem areas, etc. and to consult on specific problems.
  • May review Requests for Proposals (RFP) from Federal and state agencies and private foundations to assess the potential for applicability to the research investigations and to recommend initiation of a grant application.
  • Effectively communicates and personally supports the College's values to foster inclusiveness and diversity.

Communication/Presentation
  • Prepares and assists with oral presentations of research findings and their significance in various settings, such as departmental/laboratory staff meetings, conferences, and meetings of professional societies.
  • Co-authors and assists in the writing of manuscripts and other research reports for publication and presentation at national and international meetings.

Laboratory Management
  • Oversees general laboratory operations to ensure proper use, maintenance, and availability of equipment and supplies.
  • Monitors equipment and instrument performance and instructs others in proper laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques.
  • Ensures compliance with rules and regulations related to handling hazardous wastes, radioactivity, and ensures compliance with proper safety procedures.
