Founded by the Center for American Progress Action Fund, League of Conservation Voters, and Sierra Club, Climate Power integrates hard-hitting research, polling, state and national earned media, digital and paid media to influence the national conversation, embolden leaders to take immediate, bold climate action, and expose climate deniers and their oil and gas lobby allies.
About This Role
Climate Power has an immediate opening for a Deputy Managing Director, Political. The Deputy Managing Director will work with the Political Managing Director to lead the organization's strategic political and partner engagement to drive a national narrative around the importance of climate and clean energy investments, sell the benefits of climate action in key communities, and block efforts to dismantle climate progress.
Preference will be given to qualified candidates that are located in Washington, DC, though the position does not require the employee to work from the office.
Primary Responsibilities
- Work in partnership with the Political Managing Director to build and execute political and outreach strategies, and set and meet metrics for the Political team.
- Lead Climate Power's national partner and coalition outreach and engagement; serve as the primary point of contact for key partners and coalitions.
- Maintain and grow relationships with national partners and coalitions, including climate and clean energy groups, youth, scientists, economists, and labor groups.
- Build outreach strategies for Climate Power and work across teams to ensure frequent and consistent outreach to partner organizations, and timely follow-up.
- Represent Climate Power in coalition meetings, at events, and with key partners and engage with partners to identify opportunities for collaboration.
- Manage the Political team's rapid response in coordination with Climate Power's other teams.
- Support the Political MD's outreach to political campaigns, candidates and other political partners as needed.
- Work with Senior Advisors for Oil and Gas Campaigns and Clean Energy Economy, and the State Desks and Deputy Managing Director to coordinate Climate Power's outreach to accountability partners, business allies, and state and local partners.
- Serve on Climate Power's Senior Leadership team and support collaboration and internal communication across the organization.
- Manage an outreach associate, other staff, and consultants.
- Lead on special projects as assigned.
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned as need and capacity dictate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- 8 years of relevant prior work experience: leadership experience in advocacy organizations and/or political campaigns; including demonstrated experience leading engagement with partners and working with coalitions. Electoral experience required.
- 5 years of people and/or project management experience; demonstrated success in leading departments and diverse teams and managing complex projects.
- Clear understanding of the political landscape, especially as relating to climate justice.
- Excellent judgment in navigating complex issues and making difficult decisions.
- Collaborative leader; Must be able to work both collaboratively and independently
- Strong organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, manage competing priorities with minimal supervision.
- Strong people skills and exceptional team player
- Effective communicator-both written and oral
- Takes initiative, is creative and resourceful.
- Ability to be a proactive self-starter, working independently to move work forward to successful completion;
- Willingness to stay up to date on best practices and trends relative to the work and projects in their purview.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Workplace.
