Job Description Summary
This is skilled work at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered automotive equipment. An employee in this class performs skilled tasks in mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, fire fighting equipment, front end loader and other standard and specialized automotive and construction equipment. Employee works under general supervision using independent judgment as to methods of repair after receiving oral instructions or written work orders as to the nature of the work to be performed. A supervisor may check work during repair or test running condition of equipment after work is completed.
Job Responsibilities
100% - Essential Functions:
1. Performs general overhaul and repair work on light and heavy trucks, fire fighting equipment, gasoline and diesel motors, street sweeper, front-end loader, generators, and small engine repairs.
2. Ability to diagnose and repair electrical systems on vehicles and equipment.
3. Performs complete mechanical and electrical repairs (other than machining of parts), inspection, adjusting, repair or replacement of necessary parts related cooling, lubrication, fuel, brakes, ignition, and exhaust systems.
4. Must become familiar with trouble shooting and repair of police and fire/rescue equipment used in Public Safety vehicles. Including: emergency lights, sirens, radars, camera systems and radios.
5. Maintains all tools and equipment used in the work items stated herein.
6. Maintain and repair hydraulic systems on pertinent fire fighting and Facilities Division equipment.
7. Maintains appearance and safety of mechanics bays by sweeping, cleaning and reorganizing equipment and tools in the garage.
8. Assists other facilities groups as directed on a time-available basis.
9. Performs other related duties as directed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Education and/or Experience - Essential:
1. High School diploma or GED equivalent;
2. Vocational school experience or a combination of experience and training;
3. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license, Class B with airbrake, free of financial responsibility requirements or restrictions;
4. Must have a local telephone/cell for emergency or call-in contact;
5. Must carry a cellphone when required by job assignment.
6. Must live within a 30-mile radius of City Hall.
Desirable:
1. Certification by Automotive Service Excellency (ASE) in various automotive specialties.
Related Knowledge and Abilities - Must have experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic and other mechanical knowledge to include maintenance of heavy equipment, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in this work. Must have considerable knowledge of standard practices and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade. Must have working knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair on heavy trucks and construction equipment. Must have working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Must have the ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions. Must have the ability to adapt available tools and equipment to specified repair problems. Must have skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in vehicle motor repair and adjustment. Must have skills in locating and adjusting deficiencies in automotive equipment. Physical strength, agility, and freedom from serious physical defects as indicated by a physical examination as pertains to this position to permit the lifting and carrying of 100# loads periodically during a normal work day. Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding, steps, stairs, ramps and any other means provided to perform the duties listed under examples of duties performed.
