Job Description Summary |
Perform journey-level maintenance and repair work of City-owned vehicles and equipment.

Essential Job Functions |
•Service and repair gasoline, diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) engines, manual and automatic transmissions, rear ends, drive lines, clutch, brake and electrical systems, air conditioning and related equipment, fuel and cooling systems, hydraulics, and air brakes at a vehicle maintenance facility or the site of a vehicle breakdown.
•Perform general overhaul of equipment, including disassembly, repairing or replacing of damaged or malfunctioning parts or mechanical units. •Utilize electronic diagnostic equipment and corrective tools, including air impact wrenches, ignition scope, laptop computer, brake drum, rotor lathe, drill dress, hydraulic press, valve grinder, torch welder, front end machine, and wheel balance. •Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshooting inspections; evaluate conditions and determine extent of repair work to be performed. •Repair, replace, and adjust braking systems, master and wheel cylinders, front-end assemblies, steering systems, suspensions, alignments, and the like. •Clean work areas, equipment, and tools. |
Ancillary Job Functions |
•Maintain accurate records of services performed.
•Repair and service small engines, such as chainsaws, lawn mowers and related equipment. •May provide maintenance and repair work on stationary equipment, fixtures, and other equipment. •Perform other related duties as assigned. |
Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered |
•High school diploma or equivalent.
•2 year technical degree or minimum of three years of journey-level experience in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel vehicles and equipment. •Must possess and maintain a valid Class B CDL, with no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire. •Must possess and maintain a Missouri State Vehicle Inspection License and Freon Handler Certification. |

•Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades.
•Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with vehicle maintenance and repair, including relevant safety standards and precautions. •Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems relating to the safe and effective operation of gasoline, diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles and equipment. •Ability to use and maintain bench and hand tools, machines, and test equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades in a safe, efficient manner. •Ability to read and interpret electrical wiring and hydraulic system diagrams. •Effective verbal and written communication skills. •Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. |

•Regularly required to perform repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement.
•Regularly required to talk and listen. •Frequently required to feel attributes of objects in order to check parts for wear; grasp tools; push to move shop equipment; stand to service heavy equipment; walk; drive; reach with hands/arms to make various repairs; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl to inspect a vehicle; and move up and down from/to a sitting position on the floor to work under vehicles. •Must have clarity of vision, three-dimensional vision, ability to identify/distinguish colors, and precise hand-eye coordination in order to perform visual inspections to discover failed parts and components and follow wiring diagrams to perform diagnosis. •Requires concentrated attention from the worker. •Must be able to lift 100 or more pounds. •Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function. |
