IRU is a 12 bed Intestinal Rehabilitation and Gastroenterology Unit. Nurses work with ostomies, central lines, G and J tubes, NG tubes, and total parental nutrition all in an effort to slowly rehabilitate the intestines. Psycho social components of this illness (and other GI illnesses) complicate the care. The Healthcare Team approach is particularly important in meeting all the complex needs of the patients and families. The nursing staff works very closely with the family and there is a large teaching component to their work. The Intestinal Rehab Team at CNMC has achieved a 98% survivability rate for Short Bowel Syndrome. The unit runs at a fast pace and the children are adorable!!
All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children's National Policies and Procedures, and
in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and
accountable for their own practice. Children's National supports the development of RN relationships within the community; specifically those
relationships associated with the health and well being of the community at large.
